Inquiry Into Skilled Immigration to Australia Program

Inquiry Into Skilled Immigration to Australia Program

In March 2021, the Joint Standing Committee on Migration made the recommendations and inquired into the skilled immigration to Australia program.

According to the inquiry, COVID-19 has remarkably affected the Australian workforce. Although 90 of Australians who lost their job because of covid 19 have returned to work, there are still significant skills shortages in Australia.

More than 499,999 temporary Australia visa holders left Australia just because of the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in significant skills shortages. The joint standing committee has heard that job vacancies in November 2020 in the last years reached their highest point.

The committee stated that Australia is required to replace the highly skilled migrants who left Australia because of Covid 19. Australia’s economic recovery will be severely hampered without skilled migration.

We have put some necessary recommendations that will directly affect overseas workers below:

Recommendation 3

The committee suggests that the Department of Home Affairs needs to offer excellent transparency on where employer-skilled immigration to Australia-sponsored visa applications is in the queue.

Recommendation 6

The joint standing committee recommends that the Home Affairs Department conduct an urgent review of the priority migration skilled occupation list, in consultation with a skilled partner, with a view to increasing the number of occupations to better reflect the urgent skill storage in the covid 19 pandemic recovery. The department should offer particular consideration to electrical engineers, cooks, civil engineers, electricians, motor mechanics, carpenters and other roles in the trades, hospitality, manufacturing and agriculture sectors.

Recommendation 8

The joint standing committee recommends that the government reserve places in quarantine and on flights for skilled migrants.

Recommendation 9

The joint standing committee recommends that:

The Department of Home Affairs enhanced visa processing times for employer-sponsored visas during the COVID-19 pandemic economic recovery because of labour market needs.

The Department of Home Affairs has increased the processing times for skilled visa holders who have remained onshore in relevant employment and are seeking a permanent residency visa and subsequent skilled visa.

Recommendation 10

The joint standing committee suggests that all skilled immigration to Australia employers-sponsored visa holders be offered a more straightforward pathway to permanency.

Step Of Skill Select Program

First, check that you meet minimum points score of 65. Then, check that your occupation is included under the list of skilled occupations and that you are eligible to apply.

  • You must submit an expression of interest (EOI) before being invited to apply for the visa.
  • Some significant requirements need to be met, along with an assessment with a minimum of 65 points.
  • If your EOI is selected, you will only receive an invitation, regardless of whether you achieved the maximum 65 points.
  • Receive an invitation to apply.
  • Those applicants who score the best points are invited to apply across multiple occupations.
  • Apply for a visa
  • From the date of invitation, applicants have 60 days to submit their visa applications.

What Does This Mean for You?

If your occupation is listed above in recommendation 6 and moved to the priority migration skilled occupation list, this means a candidate with these skills will receive a travel exemption to enter Australia while the country’s borders are closed.
